Hawthorn Flies and a Wet Arse

It was my birthday the other day and tbh as birthdays go it was pretty good .  The morning was fishing on a local stream .  Evening was dinner out at a local . I had the river to myself , the river keeper was the only other person I spoke too. It was a typical conversation , the river the fish , the fly life and his ever growing number of dogs .

As for the fishing it was slow .  As usual for me I spent to long on a few fish ,  two things influenced me , number one was the Hawthorn flies which have hatched in abundance .  But as the day unfolded it became clear the fish weren’t on them yet .  The second thing was one of the rivers large brown trout .  I reckon it was 5 lbs plus .  I had managed to get into position by a red indian approach and positioned my self sitting on the back where I could deop a nymph onto it as it worked the faster run.  Probably an hour was spent with the only things to show from crouching and sitting was a dead leg and a wet arse .

Such is early season river fishing though , balmy evenings and freely rising fish are some time of yet . I did manage one on a dry fly though .  More luck than good management though .  I do feel that the season is at least up and running .
